Role Overview – Mechanical Design Engineer | Innovative Design & Sustainable Engineering

We are seeking a talented and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join the growing team at SSE. In this exciting position, you will use your expertise to design, develop, and optimise mechanical systems and components for diverse infrastructure and building projects. Main Responsibilities – Mechanical Systems Design, Project Delivery & Technical Innovation

• Lead and contribute to the concept, development, and detailed design of mechanical systems and components aligned to project and client requirements.
• Prepare high-quality design documentation, technical reports, specifications, and engineering calculations, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.
• Support multidisciplinary project teams through all stages of project design, development, and delivery—including feasibility, value engineering, and construction phases.
• Conduct detailed analysis using advanced modelling and simulation tools to ensure optimised, efficient, and sustainable mechanical designs.
• Oversee the selection, sizing, and integration of mechanical equipment, materials, and sustainable technologies to meet or exceed project goals.
• Promote a culture of innovation, quality, and continuous improvement across engineering practices and project outcomes.
• Liaise confidently with clients, stakeholders, contractors, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and assure the delivery of robust solutions.
• Champion safe working practices and embed environmental, ethical, and sustainability considerations into every aspect of your engineering work.
• Keep up-to-date, clear records while supporting the preparation of drawings, bill of materials, schedules, and operations and maintenance manuals.

What You Bring – Mechanical Engineering Experience, Technical Skills & Collaboration

• Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience in mechanical design, ideally within the engineering consultancy, infrastructure, or building services sectors.
• Proficient in 3D CAD modelling, engineering analysis, and relevant design software (such as AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or similar).
• Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, system integration, and sustainability best practices within UK regulations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts and work collaboratively across diverse teams.
• Proactive, adaptable, and detail-focused, with a strong commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable outcomes.

• Working towards or holding membership of an appropriate professional institution (IMechE, CIBSE, or equivalent) is desirable.
